McDonalds Olympic Product Placement

Beijing, the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt amazed the crowd by setting a new record in the 100-meter sprint last Saturday.

Whats his secret?  The runner feasts on fast food. Yes that unhealthy food that was featured in the documentary titled Super Size Me, a couple of years back –  in fact before setting that new Olympic record, he ate Chicken McNuggets.

Whats even more surprising is that Bolt shares the same fascination for fast food – McDonalds, in particular with other Olympic athletes. Reports claim that a growing number of athletes are plugging McDonalds during interviews, which is an unusual endorsement for finely-tuned athletes.

Here are some of them:

  • US swimmer Ryan Lochte – who stated in an interview with NBC that he eats almost all of his meals in McDonalds,
  • Stephanie Brown the American discus thrower has publicly confessed her love for the golden arches and
  • British gold medalist Rebecca Adlington – after winning her medal, she is quoted in saying Im going to have McDonalds.

While McDonalds executives relegate these plugs to coincidence this seems highly unlikely.

Globeinvestor.com is reporting today that McDonald’s paid upwards of $70-million to become the "official restaurant" of the Summer Olympics.  As a result, the fast food juggernaut managed to place a restaurant in the center of the athletes village in

Beijing Yes, thats why athletes have been going McDonalds crazy!

McDonalds is the largest restaurant in the world it has more than 30,000 outlets worldwide. Wherever you are, you will find McDonalds. Since most athletes or people in that matter, want their food to be familiar for a sense of security in this case the food is McDonalds, renowned throughout the world.

Hence, the athletes and the mysterious plugs.
