Fried chicken chain KFC is closely monitoring the program content of
Beverly Hills 90210, and its not because they like the series. Its because they air ads during the show.
KFC spokesperson Rick Maynard maintained, KFC has strict guidelines regarding the type of programming during which our commercials air and we continually monitor the content of those programs to ensure they meet our guidelines, he continued, Our media department has been in touch with the network regarding 90210, and we are closely monitoring its content going forward to determine if additional action is required on our part, including potentially pulling our advertising from the program (AdAge).
Last September, the remake of the 90s show garnered a fair share of success. In fact, 12.7 million viewers tuned in to see the premiere. Right after the 2-hour debut, CW said it would pick-up the series. But these rankings do not matter for KFC.
After all, KFCs idea of a public image is different from CWs. KFC has to paint a family picture, whereas CW can afford to be more sexually explicit. Sex is bound to come up, especially when youre airing a series that deals with young rich teenagers making their way through high school. However fine that maybe for CW (It boosts ratings, sex sells), KFC cannot afford to be associated with this type of show.
