Lenovo recently began developing ThinkPad laptops as a part of a tornado research project called Votrex2.
Scientists from the Center of Severe Weather Research went to the National Weather Center in Oklahoma. They were equipped with state-of-the-art gadgets and machines, including the laptops and customized vehicles. The team will spend the next five weeks chasing extreme weather events in Tornado Alley.
?This is without a doubt the largest tornado research project ever undertaken with the sheer number of participants, the breadth of organizations involved and the amount of equipment used,? commented Dr. Joshua Wurman, president of CSWR.
The ThinkPads will be used to help the scientists determine why tornadoes form to improve forecasting and warning systems. Scientists will use the laptops to perform real-time looping, slicing, and integrating radar data. In addition to that, these Lenovo products can also be used for communication. 120 scientists will coordinate in a mobile lab for instant communication.
