An upcoming Blu-ray disc title, to be released this August, will feature an e-commerce application that will allow viewers to shop for products in the movie and purchase them through the Internet with BD Live.
Bright Stage Media, the company that developed the new technology, did not disclose any details concerning which title would have the feature this August. The company did say that it hopes that the technology will be embraced by all major studios at the end of the year
?How many times have you seen a product in the film and say, ?I want that??? posed Randy Malinoff, co-founder of Bright Stage Media. ?We now have that answer for the consumer, without them having to search online.?
The application, called ?Connect, Share and Shop?, will offer viewers in-movie information about products and if the Blu-ray player is connected to the Internet, you can shop through many online retailers. And to top it off, the feature will also allow consumers to share their purchase through Tweeter, Facebook, and other social networking sites.
?We update the content so every time you put in the disc there are [new items],? explained Bright Stage Media Co-founder Brian Johnson.
Malinoff said that this technology will change the way product placements are viewed on films.
?There are a lot of added product placement opportunities here in the green-light phase for a film,? said Malinoff. He said that studios will have plenty of opportunities for advertising long before the Blu-ray release comes out.
