The UK government is planning to allow product placement in television programmes, making producers and broadcasters happy. This will give network a new revenue stream that will help fill the financial gaps caused by the recession.
However, Andy Harries?founder of Left Bank Pictures?told the Royal Television Society’s Cambridge Convention that producers, and not the advertisers, should have control of how the product placement will be integrated in the content.
?It is inevitable and to be welcomed, but I would like to see producers at the forefront of controlling product placement,? said Harries.
The Sky1 controller of drama, Elaine Pyke added: ?Bringing money into drama is an absolute necessity. Product placement is an absolute necessity. It is about time. It is really good for us.?
Just this week, culture secretary Ben Bradshaw announced that he would welcome a new consultation regarding the issue. Bradshaw now believes that the media networks need the extra revenue from product placement.
